New SEND rules start Sept and helpful flow charts

The government’s changes to rules for Special Needs Education and Disability (SEND) will start 1st September and all of us need to be very alert as schools, Council staff and other professionals might well not understand all the new rules themselves. A guide for parents was issued by the Government and available here (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/send-guide-for-parents-and-carers).

Parents should check any changes to their child’s support with a trusted neutral advice service like IPSEA (http://www.ipsea.org.uk/) or the Contact a Family helplines (http://www.cafamily.org.uk/).

No child should lose their statement because of the SEN changes – the Education Minister Edward Timpson has clearly explained this on a video you can see on the Special needs Jungle website (http://www.specialneedsjungle.com/sen-minister-ed-timpson-talks-special-needs-jungle-video/).

The Special Needs Jungle (http://www.specialneedsjungle.com/) is a valuable parent-led resource of special needs and disability information and has just published some SEND system flowcharts to help guide you through the options under the new rules – these are at http://www.specialneedsjungle.com/new-send-system-flow-charts-together/
